The Artist...

I was born in East London in 1948. I studied at the East London Technical College Art School under Jack Lugg and later at the Johannesburg Art School. In 1966 I met Cecil Skotnes and studied painting under his tutelage at Damelin College. In 1967 Skotnes introduced me to Ernest Ullman and for two years I worked as assistant to this famous sculptor and designer.

In 1967 I held my first one man exhibition at the SA Association of Arts Gallery in Pretoria and when, following this exhibition, I was invited by Prof. Walter Battiss to join his staff at the UNISA Art Department in 1988 as assistant and external tutor in graphic arts, I moved to Pretoria which was to be my home base for the next 27 years.

I have always favoured the woodcut as a medium of expression, but have produced metal engravings, glass paintings, many serigraphs and today I work almost exclusively on engraved or incised and painted wood panels. I am particularly interested in man and myth, stylized fauna and flora, iconic and African imagery combined in a decorative and rhythmic style.

Since 1967, I have participated in numerous exhibitions in South Africa and Internationally. In 1973 I illustrated "Xironga Folk Tales", a UNISA publication. Numerous articles on my work have been published in South African magazines and abroad and my wood panels and larger murals hang in public and private collections throughout Southern Africa, Europe, and America. A complete list of exhibitions in which my work has featured is available on request.
In 1995, I left Pretoria and moved my studio to the small Karoo town of Montagu.

Andrews has been a wanderer by nature. He has traveled widely in Southern Africa and in the East. He initiated a project to start a series of craft centres in Malawi and worked as a photographic Safari guide in the Okavango Swamps in Botswana. In 1973 he visited the Indian Ocean Islands and in 1974 Japan, Taiwan, Indochina, Iran and Turkey. In 1974 he also made his first visit to India which was to become a favourite haunt for many years to come.

From 1976 to 1978 Andrews worked for the South African Airways as a flight steward and was thus able to visit many western countries including the Americas. A fascination with hiking in the high mountainous regions of the Himalayas, shared by Ray’s partner Ute Peters, led to many private expeditions to India and Nepal. Subsequent travels have taken them to Sri Lanka, China, Thailand, Vietnam and on camping trips through Israel and Egypt.

In 2005, Ray and Ute made their first visit to Argentina and Uruguay and during four extended trips over the next eight years, they explored in depth, the jungles, high Altiplano regions of the Andes, and the vast plains of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego and southern and central Chile. The resultant exposure to diverse and different western cultures has led to less emphasis in Raymond’s work on carving or engraving and a leaning towards pure painting. Their recent travels have taken Ray and Ute to the vast ice-scapes of Antarctica.

Please note that whilst I make every effort to portray colours as accurately as possible, computer monitors, colour calibration systems and photographic techniques tend to differ, and do not interpret or display all colours in the same way.

This is a step by step record of the development of a Raymond Andrews wood panel titled
"Memories in Stone"

The design is first visualized. Sometimes I work directly onto the wood but usually my ideas ar first more or less ceveloped on paper.

1.
The design is projected by epidiascope onto the sanded and grounded wood paneI and drafted in pencil.

2.
Standing on the easel is the finished pencil draft which at this stage is sealed with sanding sealer or shellac varnish.

3 and 4.
Here I am carving the design and background into the wood surface with small hand gouges and whatever else my imagination leads me to use to make the surface of the wood expressive and interesting. This stage provides a relief which makes these works different from conventional painting. The surface is now broken up into positive and negative areas, so to speak.

5.
The neaxt step is to rub or brush some form of colour into the carved background and lines. This may be a variety of raw oxides with an oil or resin binder, or printers ink.

6.
The wood surface has been wiped clean of some of the background colour and must now dry thoroughly.

7.
Now I mask with masking tape, some of the areas where I wish the carved lines to remainl dark while I apply a further colour to the background, in this case a light bluish grey.

8.
I am brushing the above colur into the carved areas.

9.
While the paint is still wet, I wipe some of the surface with paper or cloth, in order to reveal the texture of the carving. Here I am able to achieve a feeling which begins to make the carved, painted wood panel something quite different from any other form of painting,

Scroll to the top right to continue with picture 10.

About my work...
some of my thoughts

My works are oil paintings on wood.

I prefer wood to canvas, as sometimesI shallowly carve, or engrave the surface of the wood to achieve a two dimensional, graphic rendering of the content.  Oxides and pigments are rubbed into the carved background, and the surface is rolled and painted with artist's oil and alkyd paints and sometimes also gilded in parts.  In essence the panel is developed as an incised oil painting.

Carved or incised wood embellished with raw oxide pigments and sometimes gold and other metal foils is an old art form found in African, equatorial and many oceanic cultures.

My approach is often technically sophisticated as my roots lie in the curious, resourceful and complex culture of Europe. As a result, my works sometimes display a multitude of overlaid processes which can make them intriguing. However, since I have always been immersed in the richness, the heat, colour and diversity of Africa and have been much affected by its spontaneity and innocence, my approach is often direct and fundamental. My exposure to the East has also left its mark. My subject matter is almost always natural rather than man-made and often involves human enquiry of a spiritual kind. I explore history, mythology and fantasy not formally, but light-heartedly.

My work is not intellectual nor social political and is never pessimistic. There is a diversity evident on my work, but underlying this is the connecting thread of a personal repertoire of graphic shapes and forms which I use to make a visual statement. I sometimes incorporate symbols and glyphs which have always been used by man in an effort to bridge the gap between the known and the unknown. By their very nature they cannot be explained in words. The viewer's interpretation is paramount though my titles sometimes point the way.

The visual statement replaces the need for words; explanations often hide the magic of personal discovery.

If at all I attempt to convey a message, it is simply to remind one of forgotten dreams, hopes and aspirations and of the potential we all have to live in a state of gratitude, celebration and grace.

10.
After the masking tape is removed, this what the panel looks like. The profiles at this stage gain prominence.

11.
At this stage I am ready to start developing the uncarved surface of the wood into an engraved or incised painting using a variety of different techniques. Here I am using a combination of masking and rolling to make the bird a dark blue.

12.
Continuiing with the rolling of colour, I am now creating a stone-like feel on the faces by applying many consecutive layers of colours, one on top of the other, The paint is made of raw oxide powders mixed with alkyd resin. ( a WINGEL product) It is quite thick and pasty which means that each successive layer becomes increasingly lumpy and the surface acquires a texrture.

It is quite thick and

13.
This 'wingel' coating remains tacky for some hours and I can now mask directly over it and apply some gold leaf to chosen areas. Because the rolled surface is rough this gives a broken feel to the gold.

14.
The printers ink with which I rolled the bird is now dry and quite shiny, so I am here brushing some red paint (oil) into the carved lines, after which the surface is wiped clean.

15.
Finally the whole sirface can be worked on and developed like any other painting. here I am shading the atreas of stone to bring out the relief and give depth to the painting.

16.
The finished carved and painted wood panel. The final work is varnished to protect it from dust and atmosphere.

16.
There are of course many different techniques that I use and which I have developed over the years, so each wood panel will have a slightly diferent history, but this one is rather typical and most follow the same basic format.
